I think you put your finger on it when you said the group's purpose is unclear. That's bound to cause problems. My gut feeling is that it is easier to move from formal to informal contacts than the other way round, but the root of the problem is that "you" need a rationale. Why?

I think the problem is that the groups purpose is unclear. There is a tool for everything but I don't think using anything will hide the fact that the purpose of the group is confused.

If it was purely academic work, we could just meet in seminar rooms and talk about things on blackboard (or facebook..)

If it is about being creative and social - we just meet at casual events, coffee shops, bars, libraries.

I don't think the founder knows what he wants - so whatever model we use is going to be flawed regardless. It just happens to be that the events are essentially themed on the medium they are addressing (new media..)

Nice. I definitely appreciate the point about asking a new media student (k so I'm just geek not an actual student of new media) to organise something offline.

I was taking a quick look at Yammer to see if it could work in a Uni. Their Techcrunch presentation is here http://tinyurl.com/9grtpu. They've created a version of Twitter but one where you can have threaded conversations (similar to Friendfeed). You can also create groups or follow particular tags as well as people. Seems like a good idea but don't know if there would just be too much noise once you start using in a large organisation.

As for your hub would Friendfeed itself do the trick? I'm still trying to work out how to use the thing properly but it can supposedly support most of what you want above - Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google Reader, Delicious plus a shed load of others. Think they've got rooms/groups so everything Uni wise could be kept in one place

Personally I have got bored of Facebook but I won't leave because it's the easiest thing to use for informal event organisation. I'd like to try something like Plazes but they don't seem to be making much noise.

When paying for music, I find Napster good value for a monthly tenner's 'all you can eat' downloading. If someone recommends a new artist to me, I can download their entire output in seconds.

But there are so many free streaming services out there that it's only worth paying if you want to play offline or transfer to an MP3 player. Shifter is right about we7...it looks a lot better than it used to and does work well if you're okay with the advertising.

Hype Machine (www.hypem.com) is great for finding new music and getting the buzz on what other peeps are listening to. Some of the music blogs out there are enough to do away with radio's recommendations for good. I only listen to non-music broadcasting on the radio now.

Hi Jennifr,

It's a shame that you're having problems with Spotify, hopefully I can help get it up and running for you. You say that you can log in and able to see the top hits (Britney, etc) which means that you're connected. If you click on Britney (or any other artists) and click on one of their songs does anything happen? The music should start playing right away.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you continue to have problems playing Spotify.

Sounds good - what's the best way of taking FB out of service? Cut out all the life to it (rss streams, delicious)?

Maybe not so much "cleanse" -maybe "Detox" is better -make it survive on 8 glasses of water for a week to flush out all the toxins. Maybe that says too much about my existing social life?

I've got to admit, I'm on Facebook but I haven't got a clue what it's for. If I really want to contact anyone then I'll still use email, blog comments, twitter or phone. Perhaps that's why I'm stuck on 12 friends.

Or maybe just no-one likes me.

The thought of having to proof-read 40+ student essays - before the deadline - brings me out on violent shivers.

I made sure to let them know that. I expect at last another 2-3 attempts tomorrow during my rescheduled classes. It's like all sense of reason goes out the window the moment people enter a classroom!

Yeah, it was good to get an idea what to expect next time!
I was wandering around with my head up my arse so probably didn't take as much as I could from it - but then again, it was a good for first timers because I reckon by the end everyone was on the same page at least!
